Orange County Florida Corrections Officer Lost His Gun To Prisoner At Hospital, Which Was Used Minutes Latter To Carjack Senior Citizen

WINTER PARK, FLORIDA – A prisoner escaped from a hospital Thursday morning after getting into a fight with an Orange County corrections officer and stealing his gun, which was used to carjack an 83-year-old man, police said.

James Cornell West III, 24, of Orlando, was captured a short time later and re-arrested near Maitland Avenue and U.S. 17-92.

According to Winter Park police, West was initially arrested Wednesday on burglary charges and was taken to Winter Park Hospital on Thursday. There, he attacked the corrections officer, stole his gun and fled the hospital, police said.

West then ran across Lakemont Avenue, pointed the gun at the elderly man near Lakemont and Hollywood avenues and stole his car, police said.

After several witnesses called 911, officers were able to stop the vehicle and arrest West, who faces charges of armed carjacking, robbery, aggravated assault, battery on a law enforcement officer, grand theft, attempting to elude and escape.

The corrections officer suffered minor injuries in the attack, police said.
